Say goodbye to Plasmas and LCSs? Believe it or not, but we are almost certainly looking at the demise of current display technology in Plasma and LCD. OLED is coming! Organic Light-Emitting Diodes are not just set to transform our visual experience, but revolutionise many other aspects of our lives. Imagine a world where light bulbs are a thing of the past and where the newspaper of the future might be an OLED display that refreshes with breaking news, and like a regular newspaper you could fold it up when you're done reading it and stick it in your pocket or briefcase. Futuristic? Not really. Samsung have already developed a prototype 40" TV, which is a quarter of the thickness of traditional screens, and full-blown OLED TV could be with us next year! OLED has many significant advantages over existing plasma and LCD technology. It is brighter, more flexible, more power efficient, provides wider viewing angles and importantly promises to be the least expensive display technology in the market. Surely any product that can replace the light bulb has to be taken seriously? White OLEDs emit white light that is brighter, more uniform and more energy efficient than that emitted by fluorescent lights that are currently used in homes and buildings. Their use could potentially reduce energy costs for lighting. The future is bright for OLEDs To view more from this issue of the Eye Newsletter, click here. |
