Mobile VC - A mistake or must have?

There is no doubt that society today is considerably different to that of ten years ago. Our daily lives move so rapidly that we become part of this relentless evolution, powerless to reflect, ponder, and even breathe the life we are living. The perpetual advances in technology mean that communication today is so sophisticated and encompasses the whole planet. We at C Hear have decided to take an unbiased look into the world of Mobile 3G video conferencing and ask: Is there nowhere to hide?

There are an increasing number of publications raising the awareness of Mobile video conferencing, promoting new concepts and products. A number of these articles seem to portray an inevitability for this technology being implemented and accepted. We are not so sure. Is this “Big Brother” technology what people really want? Ask yourself, would you want to be on show twenty-four hours a day, with no escape? Possibly a little melodramatic, but, needless to say, in this day and age of computerized storage of our personal information, it is not unreasonable to expect a modicum of sanctuary at the end of a telephone.

We feel that any novelty effect will be short lived. Individuals are likely to become bored or nervous about being on camera. They may not be willing to answer the phone at any given time, regardless of their appearance, attire or well-being. Sometimes people wish to experience a degree of escapism and not be under the microscope.

We at C Hear welcome innovation and advancements in technology, however, we think it is also wise to be watchful, question these developments and not just accept them. 3G videophones are already with us and no doubt many consumers see them as a wonderful tool. The quality will no doubt improve and the pricing plummet, however, we must also remember that many people have maltreated this technology for their own divisive pleasures (ie Happy Slapping and Pornography) and that many individuals will not see the appeal of being on camera.
